People looking to lose weight and get in shape always want to know what is the best exercise to lose weight?  The answer to this question could vary greatly depending on who you ask.

Many trainers, health professionals and sports buffs would probably agree that one of the best ways to lose weight is with cardiovascular exercises, “cardio,” for short.

These exercises raise your heart rate over a given period as you go through the motions and train the heart and lungs to become stronger.

The heart rate is the number of times that it beats per minute. When exercising to lose weight, the ideal heart rate is 60 – 80% of the maximum heart rate that you can sustain.

Some examples of the best exercises to lose weight are jogging, brisk walking, swimming, biking, running indoors on a treadmill, etc.

These are also called aerobic exercises because they continuously deliver oxygen to your muscles and push your heart to keep up with the intensity of the workout.

Ideally, you should exercise for 30 – 60 minutes per session, three to five times a week.

Be sure to factor in periods of rest between these sessions to give your body time to recover from the physical workout that you have just subjected it to.

It may surprise you to know that the massive fat burning from this type of workout continues for several hours after the workout is complete.  This is known as the “after burn effect”.

Cardio exercises help the body burn fat and turn it into energy, thus promoting weight loss in the process.

While the previously mentioned exercises may all be great in helping you to lose weight, the best exercise to lose weight will be primarily determined by the individual’s health, lifestyle and weight loss goals.

There can be no “one exercise fits all.” A former athlete who wishes to shed some pounds will have a program that is very different from someone who has led a sedentary lifestyle and has been diagnosed to be medically obese.

Thus, you will have to determine what exercises work best for you. This can be determined by consulting with a doctor, preferably one who is quite familiar with your medical history and is aware of any physical injuries or limitations that you may have.

Regardless of which exercise you determine is the best for your weight loss needs, the key is to get started, as there are so many benefits that exercise has to offer, such as:

  • Having a healthier heart
  • Controlling your blood pressure level
  • Mitigating the effects of diabetes
  • Reducing the risks of having osteoporosis
  • Maintaining a good sense of balance and good bone density

In addition to all of the health benefits that come with exercise, if you work out consistently, you will notice that your physique will begin to change and more and more people will notice how great you look.

All in all the best exercise for weight loss is not as important as just getting up and doing something.  With time, you will discover which exercise you enjoy the most and which works best for you.
